Finding Grief Support Groups That Fit You

Learn how to find grief support groups that fit your needs — online,

in person, or community-based — and why connection matters in healing.

Finding Grief Support Groups That Fit You

Grief can feel isolating, but you don’t have to carry it alone.

Support groups create a space where your grief is witnessed, your story is honored, and your feelings are validated by people who truly understand. The right group can feel like a lifeline — a reminder that you are not alone in this journey.

Why Support Groups Help

  • Offer understanding from people who “get it”
  • Reduce isolation and loneliness
  • Create a sense of belonging in grief
  • Provide space to share without judgment

Types of Support Groups

  • Local In-Person Groups: Often hosted by hospices, hospitals, or community centers.
  • Online Grief Communities: Virtual groups on Zoom, forums, or social media.
  • Specialized Groups: Child loss, sibling loss, spousal/partner loss.

How to Find One That Fits

  • Hospice Organizations: Many local hospices offer free or low-cost grief support groups.
  • The Compassionate Friends: Nationwide nonprofit supporting families after the death of a child.
  • Community Referrals: Churches, hospitals, and local nonprofits often know about group offerings nearby

Finding the right group may take time — and it’s okay to try more than one before something feels like a fit. Support groups aren’t about fixing grief; they’re about walking together in it. When your grief is seen and shared, it becomes just a little bit lighter to carry.
